Sparta's
own Active Parks and Recreation Department adds diligent organization to
nature's free form approach. Many special activities take place in the town's
two main parks:
Station
Park - is one hundred acres of family pleasure, including four soccer fields, a
football field, a regulation Little League field, a softball field, and a
lighted skating pond, and designated picnic areas.
Ungerman
Field - boasts a Little League field, a Babe Ruth field and football field all
of which have lights. There are also two basketball
courts and a "mini
park.” Two other parks in town, Edison Park and Tyler Park, have tennis and
basketball facilities.
Sparta
residents speak fondly of the "Sparta Glen.” A natural ravine with
hemlock groves and scenic footpaths. It still contains remnants of forges and
dams dating back to the Revolutionary War.
Sparta
Little League Football is designed to allow boys ages 7-14 to participate in the
great sport of football. The objectives are to teach the fundamentals of the
game
and to learn the meaning of teamwork and sportsmanship and generally - have fun!
Two
major ski areas are only a few miles from Sparta in Vernon.
For golfers, there are a number of public courses available including

For
those waiting to get close to nature, tubing down the Delaware or hiking the
Appalachian Trail along the Kittatinny Ridge only requires strong legs and the
desire to enjoy nature. Sussex County is a "fisherman's paradise,” where
dedicated anglers find the lakes and streams are fertile waters for the
diversity of catches.
Offered
to adults of the community are a wide variety of leisure learning programs and
sports.
Most
people who come to Sparta are from municipalities that have well-established
programs. Newcomers seek and expect this kind of involvement for their children
as well as themselves; its part of what brings them here.
